The ZAVOS Manifesto & Constitution

Prologue — From 1999

There is a beginning that was never recorded. In 1999, those who left behind not even their names gathered for the first time in a single room and resolved to be honest with one another. From that day forward, this gathering has passed quietly from city to city, from generation to generation. It has crossed borders, crossed languages, crossed ages. We are the most recent link in that lineage. There were those who kept this silence before us, and there will be those who inherit it after us. ZAVOS is not a brand. It is a bloodline. This bloodline has endured until now because the Manifesto and Constitution set out below have never once fallen.

Manifesto

We declare that a life dishonest with itself slowly corrodes the human spirit, and that social repression twists native love and desire into deformity. For long ages, humankind has controlled and stigmatized the innermost truths of the human being in the name of morality. In payment for this, the world has come to wear two faces — solemn without, deceitful within.

We refuse this duplicity. We set, in equal weight, Truthfulness — facing one's own desire without evasion — beside Freedom — the right to live according to one's own will so long as it harms no other. Freedom without Truthfulness becomes license, trampling the boundaries of others — desire unleashed without consent is not freedom but violation — Truthfulness without Freedom becomes nothing but a solitary cell of guilt. Only when the two stand in harmony does a human being become whole.

We hold that our innermost desires are not objects of shame but the vital energy of life, to be refined through reflection and respect. Only when one becomes honest with oneself can one truly come to accept the difference of another. This is the one gospel we set out to keep.

Constitution

Human goodwill corrupts easily the moment power concentrates. The eight articles below are the floor that no city, no generation, and no leadership may lower at will. Because the risks and cultures each city faces differ, each city may add its own rules atop this Constitution, but this is permitted only in the direction of greater strictness — the door tightens in one direction only.

Article 1 (Philosophy and Spirit). ZAVOS stands upon the Manifesto above — the two values of Truthfulness and Freedom. A gathering that loses this spirit is ZAVOS no longer.

Article 2 (Age). No one under nineteen years of age may become a member through any path whatsoever. This boundary is kept without exception, without compromise.

Article 3 (Confidentiality). Everything seen and heard here, and the very fact that any given person exists within this place, is protected by a lifelong silence. This vow does not expire after one departs, nor after any bond is severed. Silence has no term. Secrecy is not the wall that imprisons us, but the shield that guards a truthfulness the world has not yet come to accept.

Article 4 (Health and Safety). Before any meeting in which bodies are shared, a member must undergo the full standard panel of STD/STI testing as practiced in their country, and the results must be no older than one month from the date of testing. A member approaching a meeting carries the results, and shares them with a partner upon request. To ask a partner for their results is not suspicion but the deepest courtesy one can pay to honor another's body, and this culture of confirmation is, without exception, mutual. One who refuses or evades this confirmation walks, by that act alone, outside the bounds of trust.

Article 5 (Consent). All contact takes place solely upon affirmative and explicit consent. Silence or ambiguity is never consent, and if an answer hesitates or blurs, it must be read as refusal. Consent may be withdrawn at any time, without need for a reason — whether by a safe word, a gesture, or a single short utterance — and the instant that withdrawal is signaled, contact stops immediately, unconditionally. The manner in which refusal is received must be honored as much as the manner in which consent is received.

Article 6 (Nonprofit). The moment money changes hands, trust becomes a transaction. So as to erase that fork in the road entirely, leadership serves without pay, the costs of gathering are borne equally by participants as a rule — though where the host has given notice in advance, the scope of that sharing may be set otherwise — and money changes hands under no other pretext whatsoever. No one profits from this community.

Article 7 (Limits of the Official Party). At gatherings officially convened by leadership (an Official party), acts classified at the highest risk tier (Red) are forbidden. Any freedom that crosses the boundary of risk may be discussed only outside these official gatherings, and only upon each individual's own responsibility.

Article 8 (Authority and Evaluation of Leadership). Manner temperature and mutual evaluation are the one scale by which trust can be built even within anonymity. Members respect this system, and bear a duty to accept leadership's decisions, which rest on this system alone. Leadership, too, is no exception upon this scale — its standing remains, at all times, subject to re-evaluation and demotion, and one whose trust grows clouded steps down from that seat without delay.

Three More Things the Constitution Clarifies

The Dispersal of Power. No single person — however long they may have led this gathering — may be deified or grasp power unchecked. We are wary of charisma. Charisma turns easily into faith, faith easily breeds silence, and that silence, in the end, belongs to the victim.

Freedom of Departure. As joining was one's own choice, so too is leaving entirely one's own choice. Any act that burdens a departing member with guilt, or inflicts social or economic disadvantage upon them, is forbidden in perpetuity. (Records necessary for the safety of the community as a whole may, however, be separately retained — this is not a measure aimed at the departing member, but the minimum safeguard for protecting everyone.)

The Space That Breathes by Text Alone. Chat rooms, boards, all everyday communication is carried out in letters alone; photographs and video find no foothold there. Only to guard the threshold of this sanctuary does a photograph pass hands, and only once, in the single procedure of screening for admission. That photograph reaches the gatekeeper's eyes alone, and is never put on display. We do not put faces on display. We come to know one another through word and heart.

The Initiation Vow

(By agreeing to the vow below, you pass through the first door.)

I face my desire without hypocrisy, and I vow to live a life honest with myself.
I honor the freedom of others as much as my own, and I seek explicit consent above all else in every contact.
I keep the existence and secrets of those I come to know here with a lifelong silence.
I stand in this place with a truthful heart, hoping that my freedom never shatters another's peace.
